Information Literacy- This year, I have learned a lot about how to find good, reliable data for research purposes. We first learned about evaluating the reliability of the information on different websites. I used the Currency Relevance Authority Accuracy and Purpose, or C.R.A.A.P. test to evaluate an information source on the web. Not only have I applied this new learning to my class in Skills21, but I have also found myself using it in my History, English, and other classes in school to see whether or not the information from a website, encyclopedia, or database is accurate. I also researched a few different search engines which could help me find different types of information. I researched the search feature on Twitter. I found that this was very easy to use (as I use Twitter very often, and I knew how to access everything), and it was laid out very well. I found that this is a good search engine, because it provides many different views on a certain topic, and (depending on who posts) the information can be reliable, if the C.R.A.A.P. test is used properly. My goal for next year is to practice exercising my search engine keywords such as AND or OR. This will help allow me to get better information without having to look very far.
Collaborative Work Ethic- I worked very collaboratively during our EXPO project, especially while I wrote the science lab report. I worked with Matt, Riley, along with many other students who wanted to help out, on this report. Together, we edited, revised, added/removed parts, and did just about everything together to make this a very informational lab report. Of course with EXPO, there are a lot of other things I worked with other students on. I also worked with Greg to design my website. We shared ideas on how to create a website which will attract a lot of visitors, while creating a hub for all of our information and research on our project. Next year, I wish to continue practicing this skill, and remember to
contribute in more group discussions.
Communication- I did a lot of work on sharing my projects with others outside the classroom. For example, my first 3D shapes animation was posted to YouTube with many tags and keywords attached to try and get as many views as possible. With this in place, more people would be able to see my work and hopefully learn from it. Another example of how I have communicated my work to others is through the EXPO project website which I created. I had the social media expert make sure to promote my website in order to have more people view the website and hopefully learn about our project. A third and final example of how I have communicated my work this year was with my Municipal Solids Waste Removal project for Mr. Szymanski. I conducted a market research survey which was sent to many different people outside of the classroom. I was able to share my project, while getting the point of view from other people. In my Sophomore year, I really want to work on more projects that can affect more people from outside of the classroom. It is fun to work on these, as you can get the point of view of many people.
Innovation- I believe that I have really done well in this skills this year. In Skills21, I have found that I can think of many innovative ideas in my projects. One example of how I used innovation in my projects is in my digital persona and word cloud project. When I had completed this project, I was very unhappy with how it turned out. It was just me with a whole bunch of words floating around me. I plugged these words into a crossword puzzle generator, and formatted a crossword puzzle above my head. Next year, I hope to plan out my pieces more so that they can have better ideas before I start my projects.
Problem Solving- An important part of innovation is to have innovative problem solving skills. An example of how I solved a problem innovatively is when my PHS Logo animation would always do a funky thing where one part of a letter would jut out randomly. I solved this by making all of the letters do this, and it ended up looking like a panther scratch mark.
Responsible Citizenship- I have learned a lot about how to be responsible on the internet, information wise. I have learned how to cite sources properly in many different formats such as MLA, APA, Chicago, just to name a few. In every project after learning this, such as an essay I wrote regarding the cost of corn ethanol, I made sure to cite my sources correctly, to always give credit where credit is due. Another project which I have worked on this year was a slideshow presentation on fair use, public domain, and common knowledge. I learned all about the do’s and don’ts of using information, and have used that knowledge in future projects!
